Liliana Montalvo is a 2023-2024 TEACH Fellow, currently teaching at Bei’An Junior High School in Taiwan.
After a chance conversation with one of her colleagues, she learned about the TEACH Fellowship and its potential benefits to her professional career. Liliana applied and became a TEACH Fellow.
However, her path to becoming an educator was not always linear. Growing up in Los Angeles, California, as the daughter of working class Mexican immigrants, her parents did not have the tools to guide her educational path. Instead, she relied on the support and guidance of her teachers and counselors, becoming the first in her family to receive a college degree. Liliana never saw herself as an educator. It wasn’t until she took a job at a high school, in a community similar to her own, that she reflected on the importance and impact educators had.
She shared, “Working with these students made me realize that if they just had someone to give them a push or extra support like I did, then they can have a successful future.”
Learn more about her story of overcoming barriers and how these shaped her approach to education and led her to become a TEACH Fellow in Taiwan through her testimony video, where she shares the highs, lows, and benefits of being a teacher in Taiwan.
